SRI PREM BABA VISION
I feel that we need to reveal, to bring to the surface, our gifts; our talents; the power that has come with us. We need to think about an educational system that offers conditions for a child to manifest thepower that is already within them—to manifest the gift, the talent that is already within.
When we talk about education, what are we talking about? About school, about development, about learning? We easily confuse education with school. However, I’m not referring to school. When I talk about education, I am talking about the development of human consciousness. I am talking about methods and tools that enable the development of human consciousness.
I started this reflection on education based on my own personal experience, as I spent a large part of my life in schools. But I learned very little about how to be happy; I learned very little about how to really manifest my gifts, my talents, and my real potential. This caused me to really reflect on whether we are moving in the right direction. I feel that I started to really develop myself as a human being when, at a certain moment, I met people who believed in my potential and that gave me the strength to manifest it—and I continue to carry that with me. I feel that perhaps this was the central point of the process that I refer to as “education”.
What is the most important thing a child can learn?
Addressing education is to speak about the development of human consciousness. However, our society hasbased itself on a structure of competition, comparison, separation and a lack of interest in the wealth of gifts and talents that children already have within them. There is urgency for new values to guide the way that we educate and relate with them. We need to create a culture of peace and prosperity within schools that values not only logical reasoning and knowledge of the world, but also internal languages, our individual history, and the ways that these mechanisms reverberate in our personal relationships.
Solutions in the educational system to help our children
Education is a major area of activity in the Awaken Love Action Institute. For the educational process proposed by the Institute to truly take place, the adults involved must experience the methodology that has been developed.
The methodology consists of four workshops that work as tools of self-knowledge and development for the educator. They can reveal deep processes which are being experienced inside the children. The institute has the sensitivity to customize the methodology for each institution it takes care of, according to a diagnostic made by our staff and the participation of the involved community. From the diagnostic, we draw up an action plan that respects the socio-cultural characteristics of the community. It may involve any of the tools, so that the teaching staff can work in the classroom coming from a new set of values and perceptions.
Storytelling is a rich tool for self-knowledge that may reveal deep processes being experienced internally in children. When the educator becomes aware of the power and meaning of the tales, he or she can use the storytelling to transmit values, acknowledge feelings and bring awareness so that a problem can be overcome and integrated into the student’s story.
2) Practice of silence / Silence practice
This methodology provides the educator with the experience of silence and of emptying the mind, in order to understand its importance through practice. The educator will be trained to apply the practices in the classroom and in his or her own life, understanding that this is going to help students in both cognitive learning and in relationships.
This means training the educator to be their own leader; aware of their richness, their beauty, and also their weaknesses. It is a process of self-knowledge that brings greater sensitivity when looking at the events of their own life, and consequently, to expand their comprehension and ability to embrace the life events of their students.
4) Conflict Mediation and Cooperative Language
Cooperative Language – using methods of Reflective Transformative Mediation, Non-Violent Communication, Restorative Circles, and Circles of Peace – aims to help students communicate using new paradigms when in conflict where there are no winners, but rather a greater understanding of the universe of others, so that they can reach an agreement.
WHAT HAS ALREADY BEEN DONE
São Caetano do Sul
In 2013 we implemented a pilot project called “Project Flourish”in Sao Caetano do Sul in the state of Sao Paulo. Sao Caetano is part of the economic center of ABC and is the city with the highest Human Development Index of the country according to the IBGEs last census. In 2013 the Pilot Project Flourish was implemented in three schools, starting with thirty six professionals ranging from directors, pedagogical coordinators, teachers and support teams (doormen, cooks and inspectors) from the first year of elementary school, in addition to the educational advisors of CECAPE.
